The Red Yeast of Rice is made from the fermentation of rice by a yeast known as Monascus purpureus. It provides several monacolinas, the main monacolina K. It can also contain isoflavones, monounsaturated fats and sterols. Some of these naturally occurring substances are similar (and in some cases identical) to “statins”, synthetic drugs that are used to control blood cholesterol levels and whose activity is focused on blocking the production of endogenous cholesterol
