In the last couple of years, there has been a wave of consciousness when it comes to the cosmetic industry. People have become more aware of what they put on their skin, and how it affects their health. It’s not only what you put into your body, but also what you put on your body. The skin is the largest organ and up to 60% of what you apply on it, enters your blood stream. If what you put on your skin is full of chemicals you can’t even pronounce and contain harmful ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulphate, amongst many others, you should seriously consider what it can be doing to your health.

How do chemicals affect your health?

Chemical ingredients that shouldn’t be entering our system can really disrupt hormonal balance. There’s this common misconception that our endocrine system just involves our reproductive area and affects things like our mood, irritability, suffering from premenstrual syndrome, etc. However, hormones are much more than that. They are chemical messengers in our body (the whole body!) that are responsible for sending messages to all the organs through the circulatory system. When these are disrupted, you are affecting an entire system in the body, which can lead to health issues.

That’s why, it’s important to go clean when it comes to cosmetics. Nowadays, we have endless organic and chemicalfree alternatives to choose from. Find out what beauty products are the most toxic and harmful ones for your health!

  • Deodorant is one of the beauty products you should first replace for a non-toxic alternative. The underarms are the most critical detoxifying areas in the body, where lymph nodes and sweat glands are concentrated. Deodorants are known for containing toxic ingredients that are linked to breast cancer. Replace your conventional deodorant for an organic and natural one.
  • Sunscreen is ironically one of the most powerful skin irritants in the cosmetic industry, due to the chemicals it contains. However, it is a must-have product to protect our skin from the damaging affects of the sun. To find out what the safest sunscreens are, head to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) report. They’ve carried out exhaustive research on what sunscreens are safe to use and which ones you should avoid.
  • Hair products such as shampoo and conditioner are some of the most toxic-laden products in the beauty industry. They don’t only go onto your scalp and hair, but also end up all over your body, as well as being inhaled due to the steam in the shower. They are filled with parabens, phthalates, and sodium lauryl sulphate, amongst many others toxic ingredients that are potentially carcinogenic and endocrine disruptors. Replace your hair product ingredients for clean and organic options.

In general, conventional beauty products are filled with harmful chemicals that you should be avoiding, but these are the top 3 beauty products we use on a regular basis that should be replaced for organic alternatives.
