The importance of physical activity is not easy to summarize, since new benefits for your health are discovered every day. Today’s society is falling dangerously into a more sedentary lifestyle. As such, we need to increase daily activity levels.

Benefits of physical activity

Staying active means keeping your body functioning at a high level of movement. Regular exercise will improve the functioning of your lungs and heart to burn excess calories more efficiently and thus control weight more effectively. In addition, exercise will also improve your muscular strength, increase your joint flexibility and improve your resistance.

Moreover, physical activity reduces the risk of heart diseases, the main cause of death in the majority of developed countries. Furthermore, exercise helps to reduce the risk of cerebrovascular accidents, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. Regular exercise thus benefits anyone who is reluctant to visit the doctor, reducing the number of visits and helping to prevent hospitalization and the use of medications.

Ensuring quality of life in old age

Adult age is one of the key stages for maintaining an exercise regimen, maintaining weight and preventing many chronic health problems. Osteoporosis, hypertension, coronary diseases and diabetes could be avoidable with a healthy lifestyle. Understanding the importance of physical activity is a way to construct a good base for health to face old age. Likewise, it’s important that you remain active throughout your life, no matter what stage you may be in.

Choose what you like the most

Exercise doesn’t have to be boring, nor should it be daily torture. It should be something you enjoy and that helps you increase your day-to-day mood. Exercise is proven to be effective in alleviating symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety.

Any kind of activity will be beneficial to some degree. From walking, swimming or riding a bike, to more “serene” sports such as yoga, exercise can bring many benefits to your body.

You should start warming up from 5 to 10 minutes in order to increase your blood flow and prepare your body for the activity. Continue the warm-up with several minutes of stretching in order to increase your flexibility and reduce the risk of suffering injuries. After the activity, you should do from 5 to 10 minutes of stretching.

Long workdays and day-to-day stress keep a large part of the population from doing the recommended physical activity. The older the population gets, the larger the percentage of inactive individuals.

It is important to understand the importance of physical activity and to do it several times a week with different exercises to reap the most rewards from it. Many people do intense exercise once a week, but this is not advisable due to the fact that it raises the risk of injuries. The ideal method is to exercise over several days with different kinds of exercises. Try to find some activities you like, or even a partner to do them with.
