How does our physical appearance influence the balance between body and mind?

Looking good and liking yourself is not a sign of frivolity. Rather, it implies strengthening self-esteem and contributing to a perfect balance between body and mind.

Our esteem, or lack of it, is largely determined by our cognition and therefore the vision we have of ourselves is a product of our self-esteem.

Self-esteem refers to positive (high self-esteem) or negative (low self-esteem) feelings. Thus, we will come to experience positive feelings of high self-esteem when we believe we are good and others see us in a positive way. On the contrary, we will experience negative feelings of low self-esteem when we believe we are less than others and think they perceive us the same way.

Although the psychological factor is very strong in this sense; undoubtedly, the aesthetic aspect fulfills a fundamental factor since, if we do not like ourselves, it is very probable that we will see ourselves as someone incapable of being liked by others.

Feeling younger and in need of physical and mental improvement

A study by the University of Florida showed that in most cases, the self-esteem of people who undergo cosmetic surgery increases significantly. Sometimes it is because the person wants to undergo treatment that makes them feel younger, but in other cases it is a necessity to improve the physical and, therefore, psychological state of the person.

The statistics do not lie: both men and women are increasingly concerned about their physical appearance and are looking for an improvement in their appearance.

An article published in The Medical Journal of Australia found that “studies suggest that most patients who underwent aesthetic improvements were satisfied with the outcome and felt better about themselves”.

Other research published in Clinical Psychological Science compared people who had a plastic surgery procedure with those who were interested in one but did not have it. The participants in the study who chose to undergo cosmetic repairs and improvements also reported improvements in their mental health on a wide range of factors. Some of these included:

  • Anxiety
  • Social phobia
  • Achievement of goals
  • Quality of life
  • Life satisfaction
  • Attractiveness
  • Well-being
  • Self-confidence
