Do you know what aromatherapy means?

You have surely heard about Aromatherapy but don’t know exactly what does it mean. Through this post we will try to explain all about it. When and why is it used, etc.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses aromatic plants oils, including essential oils and other aromatic compounds for the objective of changing someone’s mood, psychological or physical wellbeing. Aromatherapists use mixes of therapeutic essential oils that can be used through application, massage, inhalation or water immersion.

In other words, aromatherapy is a holistic healing of the physical body and soul (spirit) healing with scent (aroma) and touch (body massage).
The scents go through an area in the brain called lymbic system.
When stimulated, it generates endorphins, neurotransmitters and other chemicals.

Some essential oils such as tea tree also have anti-microbial effects, but there’s still a lack of clinical evidence.
The use of essential oils for therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes goes back to a number of ancient civilizations, including the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, who used them in cosmetics, perfumes and drugs.

The strength of the aromatherapy comes from its aptitude to promote relaxation. In addition, it produces a feeling of happiness and peace. Its effects are quick and lasting because it goes to the emotional root of the person.
An aroma can generate lots of almost forgotten memories – the zone of the brain associated to smell is the same for memory.

Some of the supposed psychological effects of the essential oils are: relaxing, balanced, stimulant, antidepressant, aphrodisiac and stimulant of the mind.

The most used essential oils are basil, tea tree, jasmine, lavender, rose, sandalwood and rosemary.

Although aromatherapy is not accepted by the scientific and medical communities, it is proven to help on wellbeing and people to overcome life situations.
We’d love to know if you ever tried this therapy and read your comments about it!
