Nowadays, with the way food is produced, we have to be more careful about the food we consume. In an ideal world, we would all be eating organic, seasonal produce, but unfortunately, not everyone has access to organic food or can afford it. However, there’s a common misconception that organic food is expensive. It doesn’t have to be if you know where to shop. If you go to your local market that sells organic produce of the region you live in, the costs actually end up being very affordable. In fact, it ends up being even cheaper than normal supermarkets as the middleman and packaging costs are taken away.

Either way, we all know that buying organic food at all times isn’t always possible. However, there are some fruits and vegetables you should be extra cautious of buying non-organic as they are pesticide and chemical laden and have been demonstrated to cause a wide array of health issues, such as hormonal disruptions, skin issues, diabetes, thyroid problems, and many more.

Therefore, even if you can’t always buy organic produce, these are the fruits and vegetables, known as the dirty dozen, that you should definitely try to buy organic.

Fruits:

  • Pears
  • Apples
  • Peaches
  • Oranges
  • Mandarins
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes

Vegetables:

  • Spinach
  • Cucumbers
  • Celery
  • Carrots

When you’re shopping for food, keep these fruits and vegetables in mind and always aim to buy them organic. You’re not only doing your health a favour, but you’re also investing in local farmers and lowering the environmental impact.
