We often take sleep for granted thinking that it’s not that important. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Sleep is actually fundamental for our health. When we sleep, our body has time to recover and restore itself through the different stages our body goes through during the sleep cycle.

During the different stages, tissue growth and repair occurs, after all the wear and tear that happens throughout the day, hormones are released, such as growth hormone-essential for growth and development, including muscle development-, and energy is restored. Therefore, getting enough sleep is vital for our health and wellbeing.

If you get your 8 hours of rest every night, your memory improves, the immune system is strengthened, blood pressure decreases, inflammation in the body is reduced, concentration and brain capacity improves, and you’ll have more energy and better mood. You will also maintain a healthy weight, as lack of sleep has been linked to weight gain. The part of the brain that controls sleep is also responsible for metabolism; therefore, not sleeping enough causes your body to release the hormones that increase appetite.

We’ve all experienced not sleeping enough for days on end, and then we start feeling weaker and we end up getting sick, right? Well that’s because your immune system weakens when you don’t get enough sleep. You most probably are cranky the next day, your energy levels are low and you’re not as productive as you could be.

Thankfully, all of that can be easily avoided just by making sleep one of your daily priorities. Make sure you get your 8 hours of sleep every night and you’ll have much more energy, you’ll be able to function properly and face each day with productivity and motivation.

If you’re a troubled sleeper, why not try these tips to improve your sleep? You’ll thank yourself in the long run!
